Lab lab or Dolichos bean (Lab lab purpureus var. typicus)
Fabaceae
Varieties
Bush type Co 6, Co 7, Co 8, Co 9, Co 10, Co 11, Co 12, Co 13, Co (Gb) 14, Arka Jay and Arka Vijay are cultivated.
Pandal type
Co 1, Co 2, Co 3, Co 4, Co 5 and Pusa Early Prolific are mainly under cultivation.
Soil
Well drained loamy soil with pH range of 6.5-8.5 is suited for lab lab cultivation.
Season
Bush type can be grown throughout year; Pandal type can be grown during July – August.
Seed rate
25 kg/ha for Bush type and 5 kg/ha for Pandal type is required.
Rhizobial treatment
Treat the seeds with three packets (600 g) of Rhizobial culture per ha using rice gruel as binder. Dry the treated seeds in shade for 15 – 30 minutes before sowing.
Preparation of field
Plough the land to a fine tilth and form ridges and furrows 60 cm apart for bush types. For growing in pandal system, dig pits of 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm at required spacing and fill it up with FYM.
Sowing
Dibble single seed 30 cm apart on one side of the ridge formed at a spacing of 60 cm for bush type. For pandal type sow 2 - 3 seeds/pit at 2 x 3 m spacing. Spacing for Co 1 Dolichos beans is 1 x 1 m.
Irrigation
Irrigation should be done immediately after sowing and on 3rd day, thereafter once in a week.
After cultivation
Hoeing and weeding can be done as and when necessary. Provide stakes to reach pandal of 2 m height and train the vines on pandal.
Application of fertilizers
(a) Basal dressing for bush type
(b) For pandal type
Apply 10 kg FYM per pit (20 t/ha) 100 g of NPK 6:12:12 mixture as basal and 10 g N per pit after 30 days. Apply 2 kg each of Azospyrillum and Phosphobacterium per ha at the time of sowing.
Plant protection
Pests Pod borer Pod borer can be controlled by spraying Carbaryl 50 WP thrice at fortnightly intervals at the rate of 2 g/lit. Dust with Carbaryl 10 D at the rate of 2.5 kg/ha or Quinalphos 25 EC @ 2 ml/lit.
Sucking pests
Sucking pests can be controlled by spraying Malathion 50 EC 1 ml/lit or Dimethoate 30 EC 1 ml/lit or Methyl dematon 25 EC 1 ml/lit at 15 days interval to control aphids and other insects.
Diseases
Powdery mildew Powdery mildew can be controlled by spraying Wettable sulphur 2 g/lit or Carbendazim 0.5 g/ litre.
Yield
